Design for the Visually Impaired
This project involved designing and making an everyday object for 80-year-old Silvia, who was gradually becoming closer to being blind with age. She wanted something that would help draw less attention to her growing disability and retain her independence. I designed this purse for her to help build her confidence and regain some of her independence. The design has textured pockets and slots for each note and coin, extending brail design to objects. Silvia now knows how to recognise the type of coin/ note without even looking down at the purse. The design is complete with a bell making it easy to find in a busy bag. Finally, poppers and velcro are used instead of buttons, making it easier to seal and put away.
